What Does Your LinkedIn Profile Say About You?

16 11 2010

How active on you with LinkedIn?  Is your profile complete? What is the state of your network?

  • Do you know that hiring managers, recruiters, and networkers are looking at your LinkedIn profile, whether you are actively looking for a job or not?
  • Does your Headline attract their attention?
  • Do you have a good photo, one in which you are dressed professionally and have a smile?
  • Have you filled in your work experience and described what you have accomplished?  Or do you assume that the viewer already knows what a marketing or IT or accounting or HR professional does?  It is safe to assume that your experience is not generic, like everyone else’s, and therefore, you do have something that differentiates you from others?
  • Do you have recommendations?  Have you made a positive impression on your managers, your colleagues or your clients/customers?

If you have 10, 15, 20 or more years of experience, and only 30-50 connections, where are all the people with whom you’ve interacted throughout your career?  Are you someone who has influence and connections with others such that someone else would want to network with you?

Hiring managers, recruiters, and others glean an impression of you – someone who is active in his/her professional career, someone who maintains relationships with others, someone who makes the effort to be visible.  If you don’t want want to be visible, then what is the point of having a presence on LinkedIn?  You say a lot about yourself, with or without an active presence on LinkedIn.  What do you want your profile to say?

Your LinkedIn profile and network can connect you with others who can share helpful information in your profession or industry, help mentor you as you climb the career ladder, or connect you with opportunities of which you would not otherwise be aware.   LinkedIn provides you with the opportunity to take a more active role in your career, so complete your profile, build your network, and build your relationships. You never know what good things will come your way!
